Serial mgmt of ups with usb cable

Hi all,

I just installed a ups for my linux server(CentOS).
The ups is connected to the server with a cable which has a usb and a UTP connector(if I am correct this is the same as serial; it is a COM port).

However, I can not seem to get it working.
If I plug in the usb cable, I get this in dmesg:
ohci_hcd 0000:00:02.0: wakeup
usb 2-6: new low speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 4
usb 2-6: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

I also did modprobe usbserial.

After that I tried to create some device files:
mknod /dev/ttyUS0 c 188 0
I created this until /dev/ttyUS5.

I tried with all the device files
but I can't get it to work.
Am I doing something wrong?
Is there any way I could check this setup?
Shouldnt I be seeing a device file created in dmesg output?

Thanks in advance for any help!

All the details depend on the make/model of UPS.
Difficult to provide help without this information.

deadeyes,

Your dmesg snippet shows the USB device is not recognised by any driver.
What does lsusb show ?

Looks like this unit is recognized is as a USB HID ( i.e mice and keyboards). Look at the output of the lsusb command. MGE is compatable with NUT and they have their own linux compatable software.

[root@localhost ~]# lsusb
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0463:ffff MGE UPS Systems UPS
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

This is what I get.
So it is connected alright.

The question now is how I can make it clear that this port is a "serial" communication adapter and to create a correct device file.

I am aware that I could get this to work with NUT but I would like to know how that software communicates with the UPS devices (in terms of device files).

THanks for pointing those things out already!

From what I googled (without knowing the exact part number) the UPS is recognized as USB HID and not a serial device.

I suggest installing NUT.

deadeyes,

Googling for
Code:
0463:ffff +usb +linux
Shows that you need this driver
