Serial line is looped back?

Hi all,

Does anyone have any idea why I fail to connect to my ISP on roughly 4 out of 5 occasions, returning an error...

pppd: Serial line is looped back
pppd: Connection terminated
pppd died: Loopback detected (exit code 17)

but sometimes I connect just fine?

I'm using SuSE 8.1, KInternet to dial and a Psion Goldcard modem.

I just saw this error message for the first time myself.
My firewal has a motherboard on which the serial ports dont work (a result I think of some experiments in bus overclocking) so I use a serial port card to hook my modem up. The last serial port card I had died after giving an occaisional "Serial line is looped back" error. So my recommendation would be to first make sure that everything is connected firmly/ correctly and maybe try a different modem / serial port / mobo to see if it is hardware.
