Segmentation fault during Slackware setup. Suspect hardware.
 

Just recently purchased Slackware 10, which installed fine on my old Compaq Armada laptop. Now when trying to install on home built desktop it will spit out the following error during package installation (after partitioning, checking disks, and selecting packages) :

I have tried swaping in a different hard drive, different CD drives, different RAM sticks, different RAM slots, removed all cards, except for video (I don't have an extra one), and popped the CMOS battery overnight. I've also reseated the video card and sprayed out all the dust bunnies I could find. This desktop has been on the shelf for a while (just moved and didn't get a chance to set it up right away), but prior to that it ran fine for several years.
While trying to install Windows XP I have received Page Fault, Stop 0x00000050 BSOD several times, even though it finally did install.
I'm down to thinking it's either the video card or the CPU/mobo. However, before I flip a coin and run out to buy a new one of these, is there anyone out there with a better understanding of this kind of error code? I'm leaning more to the CPU/mobo being at fault, but I welcome any suggestions. THANKS!

Hardware setup:
Video Card: 3D Prophet 2MX
Mobo: Asus A7V-133 (Award BIOS v1.04)
CPU: AMD Athlon 850
Mem: 256mb

I don't have any USB devices attached, but just to rule it out I disabled all USB components in the BIOS and passed the "bare.i nousb" when choosing the kernel to boot with. Now I'm getting

"PCI: PCI BIOS revision 2.1 entry at 0xf1150, last bus=1
Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 0002e000"

which leads to a

"Code: Bad EIP value
<0> Kernel Panic: Attempted to kill init!"

This happens before it can even get to the root log in from the cd.
I tried shorting the CMOS reset jumpers, which didn't help either. I also made sure the ram is set to the same speed in the BIOS as another site suggested.

Ah well..... I think I'll be having to scrounge up an inexpensive video card, and if that doesn't fix it spring for a new mobo. Thanks for the help though.

Mybe worth a quick check of your ram with memtest or some such.
