Think I've managed to get a stable install of Linux Mint 18.3 now i hope lol. Was a bit of work and some annoying steps, but got their in the end. Will note the steps I took tomorrow.

Now got another post to do as the VPN won't work says the "VPN disconnected because the VPN service stopped" lol

Steps i took to get the HP 255 G6 working with mate 18.03;

Update Bios using USB key (updated to version F23)
install mint from DVD (Installing from USB drive seemed to mess up the drives SDA/SDB so that after reboot no OS drive was detected)
Updated kernel after install (applied kernel update on its own, (when I initially tried to apply all updates it crashed/froze and no reboot)
rebooted and all works okay.

Seems to be stable and pretty quick

Bit of trial and error but happy with it now.

Thanks for the assistance

to the grub file ( /etc/default/grub) , then:
Code:
 sudo update-grub
I've run Mint-something on several Lenovo laptops and "convertibles" (now called 2-in-1) without serious troubles. I'm still running a Lenovo X220-tablet "convertible" as my primary walk-around system.

Every laptop seems to do something proprietary or off-the-wall with their keyboard so that special features are exposed with a small footprint. The "convertibles" were chasing the available touch/multi-touch/tablet implementations while X11 was also playing catch-up tag.

Thanks in advance,
