Seeing if my new HDD is working or not?

I just put a new pata 320gb hdd in my computer, but I can't seem to be able to access it. I'm no expert in linux so my first guess is that I'm doing something wrong. I tried doing "ls /dev/hd* | df -h" but it didn't come up.

I would first try looking through dmesg/syslog and see if it was recognized. It should tell you that it discovered the device or not.

Ah, excellent. Ok, so it sees it as hdb, but it says unknown partition table. I'm assuming I just need to format with fdisk? Also why when I used df -h did it say it was only 10M with a filesystem of udev?

You need to partition it, then format it, then mount it. Make an entry in your fstab if you want it mounted every time you turn the machine on. Ubuntu may auto mount it for you and make the fstab entry the first time you power up with the new drive ready.
