Sdhc unreadable

Running linux mint una on older macbook. It will read sd cards but will not read or recognize my sdhc cards. Any ideas how to resolve this? Im new to Linux and have much to learn. I appreciate your patience.

Does your macbook support reading SDHC cards? They have different standards.

Also if fdisk or parted

Code:
sudo fdisk -l
Code:
sudo parted -l
don't see it as well as the command

Code:
mount
Then I would run

Code:
dmesg
to look for sdhc errors. Might even be in red text. Also. To get by limitions like this.
I keep a usb card reader that reads every card under the sun. Just plug the adapter into usb.
Vivitar makes a 50 in 1 usb card reader. Google will find such stuff for you.

The question I'd ask is what file system is on those cards? If they're formatted for Apple and use HFS or another Apple file system, you may not have the right modules loaded (by default) to mount/read/recognize the card.

A simple troubleshooting step; without the card plugged in, run "sudo dmesg -c". Then plug the card in, wait a few seconds, and run "dmesg", to see what output you have, and post it here. If the DEVICE is working, you should see output, and some messages about disk errors/bad blocks/unrecognized/who-knows...which will let you know you're just missing modules.

If you have a spare SDHC card, you can also shove it in, and try to format it using fdisk or gparted.

Use CODE tags when posting such things....just shoving a huge chunk of (mostly repeated) output with nothing else into a thread doesn't make it easier to read.

This tells you that the card reader is recognized, and it is saying there are read/block errors. Since you've just posted a huge chunk of output with no context, there's not much we can tell you beyond the card reader appears to be working. You still haven't told us what filesystem is on that card, anything you've done/tried to mount or read it, or if you tried to format a card in that device specifically for use with Linux.

Again; what is the file system on that card (as in, what was used to format it initially?), what version of Mint are you using, and can you format an SDHC card to experiment with??

It was formatted on a mac for a moultrie game camera and a slr camera, FAT as i recalI. was sure the reader was working since it worked fine with a standard sd card that was formatted for the same purpose. It just doesnt acknowledge the sdhc card when inserted. It will beep when inserted but nothing else. Doesnt show up in file manager either. Im using the latest version of mint, una. Im new to linux and have much to learn. I appreciate your patience. When i boot into mac os, it reads it fine using the same card slot. Sorry for all the code, wasnt sure it was all needed or not. Didnt want to leave anything important out

Gotcha, but when it starts to repeat, there's no need to post more. And please use CODE tags to make it readable.

All that said, if you had told us it beeped when inserted, that would have told us the reader device was recognized. Also, there are different types of FAT file systems, and if you don't have the modules loaded it won't be recognized. Try running "sudo apt install exfat-utils exfat-fuse" with the card removed, then re-insert. FAT file systems can be vfat, fat32, or exfat..without the module, you can't read it. Since it was for use in a DSLR, chances are it's exfat.

Understood. What is a code tag? Ran that command. after reinserting no beep but will sound when removed. IIRC its Fat32.
I dont think this computer is capable of reading sdhc cards.

If you look at the top of the editor window, and hover over the # tag, you'll see it say "Wrap CODE tags around selected area".

And did you reboot after installing those modules?? What was the output of that command?? What are the last parts of dmesg after installing the modules?? To go through steps again:
  • Reboot
  • Run "sudo dmesg -c" with the card removed.
  • Run "ls /dev/sd*" and look at what it says, as well as "ls /dev/mm*"
  • Insert the card, then run "dmesg" and post what it says IN CODE TAGS.
  • Run "ls /dev/sd*" and "ls /dev/mm*" again, and look for anything different. Make note of the differences.

The ls /dev/sd* command brings back the same thing with and without the sd card inserted.
ls /dev/mm* brings back ls: cannot access '/dev/mm*': No such file or directory

After reboot, it seems to be working. I cant thank you enough!!

The card is formatted for dos fat 32
After ejecting the card, it would not mount again. It mounts fine in mac OS so I know the card reader will handle it.

So I reformatted the card from mac os to MS-DOS FAT. Shut the computer down and inserted the card and booted up in Linux mint and the card showed on the desktop.
