SD internal card reader not seeing cards??

Guys and Gals,
Have Kubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 kernel 2.6.22-14-generic
installed on my laptop. This laptop has a built in multi card reader. When a SD card is inserted NOTHING happens.
First lshw
*-pcmcia
description: CardBus bridge
product: CB-710/2/4 Cardbus Controller
vendor: ENE Technology Inc
physical id: 1
bus info: pci@0000:02:01.0
version: 02
width: 32 bits
clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pcmcia bus_master cap_list
configuration: driver=yenta_cardbus latency=176 maxlatency=5 mingnt=192 module=yenta_socket
*-memory UNCLAIMED
description: FLASH memory
product: CB710 Memory Card Reader Controller
vendor: ENE Technology Inc
physical id: 1.1
bus info: pci@0000:02:01.1
version: 00
width: 32 bits
clock: 33MHz (30.3ns)
capabilities: cap_list
configuration: latency=32

Then lspci:
02:01.0 CardBus bridge: ENE Technology Inc CB-710/2/4 Cardbus Controller (rev 02)
02:01.1 FLASH memory: ENE Technology Inc CB710 Memory Card Reader Controller

Then pccardctl status:
Socket 0:
no card

That is when there IS a card inserted.

Could anyone please help me with this. I have been researching this for about 2 weeks and cannot find an answer!
Thanks,
Jtek

What model laptop? Maybe one of the installation accounts on linux-on-laptops or tuxmobil will have a solution. Though from a quick google, I'm not terribly optimistic as I've seen posts that it is unsupported in even the 2.6.24 kernel.

Just googling around, there are a lot of people reporting problems with this device:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=59474

http://hardware4linux.info/component/25978/

These are reported issues with kernel support. Newer kernels were suppose to have support for this device but the problem reports appear unresolved. If it's a kernel issue, there's not much you can do, other than more research and trying latest kernels.

kilgoretrout and pljvaldez, I too have seen the problems reported by other people through my google searches. But it seems that these readers worked in Edgy and feisy but not Gutsy. Now I would really hate to go back to an older kernel. I really like Gutsy and other than this small issue Gutsy is by far the most user friendly and polished kernel yet.
Oh yea the Laptop is a HP Pavilion zd7380us.
thanks again for the help!

If it's a kernel issue, there's not much you can do other than try other kernels or patch your existing kernel to work around the problem. With kernel development moving so fast these days, regressions are not that uncommon, unfortunately.
