Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

SCSI + RAID : Information

Hey all!

I'm looking for some information about SCSI cards and drives.

I am just wanting to mess aroung with either one scsi drive or two working in a RAID array. I know nothing about either of these things, but I knew nothing about linux a year ago, either!

My questions are:

1. Presumably I can buy a scsi controller (PCI card) and stick that in my linux box and then, using the correct module, I would be able to install a SCSI drive. My computer doesn't have SCSI capabilities, so I guess I need a card. Is this correct?

2. If I want to use RAID, then I will need a SCSI-RAID controller (instead of a simple SCSI card). Is this correct?

3. I understand that there are at least 3 different SCSI connectors: 50 pin, 68 pin, 80 pin etc.... Which one is the most used?

Thanks in advance for all the help. I'm looking forward to getting a SCSI drive working!!!

Oh, one other question:

4. how does SCSI work with hotplugging? I thought that SCSI was the hard drive which you can remove WHILE the computer is still running. At least, I assume that is what hotplugging means. Is this correct? And as all SCSI drives/controllers hotpluggable?
