SCSI Problems?

I have tried Slackware 10.1 (my favorite) and knoppix boot CD and both are having problems.

Knoppix finds the SCSI ok and my IDE CD-ROM drive for example:

Found SCSI Device(s) handled by aic7xxx.o
Scanning for USB~~~....... Done
Enabling DMa for accelerator for hdc [CR-48XATE] <---OK
Looking for CD-ROM in: /dev/scd0 <----what the hell? (hangs)

Slackware will not recognize my SCSI hd at all:

cfdisk says FATAL ERROR: blah blah

I have tried scsi2.i scsi3.i scsi.i same with all

I tried a dmesg and it said something about some deveice requiring IRQ 15 but it has IRQ5 but iot was not clear to me what it was referring to.

What do I need to set my SCSI devices for ? I have windows installed on the drive so I don not want to mess with the device settings for the drive.

Did you try the adaptec.s?

knoppix?

So what do you suppose the problem is with knoppix then?

Looks to me like its trying to probe a scsi cd device.? Which I dont have.

hang on cd drive scan

slackware now exibits the same behavior that knoppix is.

When you choose to have setup scan for the cd drive it kinda, uh, hangs.. This might seem like a dumb question but can you ruin hardware by probing the devices improperly?

Both knoppix and slack appear to freeze while scanning the scsi bus for a cd-rom drive.

The only devices that I know of that can be damaged is monitors. knoppix does support for adaptec but I do know if it works or not. I am also not sure why slack would freeze while scanning for SCSI cdrom.

prevent bus scsi bus scan?

Is there a way to prevent scsi bus scanning (CD) for the slack 10 install? I know I can specify a drive manually but I want to be able to solve this problem in the future. I have also had this problem (in the past) with IDE device scans as well.

It seems there should be some kind of timer to interrupt these hardware scans if they take too long.I'm not a C/C++ programmer or I would change this myself. It just stops the whole install when it is not nes. to do so.

cd-rom (CD-RW) mounting problems

I have also tried mounting the cdrom before setup and it hangs

One time I tried running cfdisk to see what it displayed and said somthing about read only and kinda froze, then I started smacking buttons to try to get a prompt and CTRL-ALT-DEL tried to shut down the system and I saw somethuing about DMA problems

I have also tried moving the drive around on the bus AND changing the DMA-XX settings in the BIOS

Every time I try to mount the CD it hangs!

init doesn't report any problems just that the CD-ROM (actually a CD-RW) is hda and it lists the device name and everythinig [CR-40XATE??]

I would love to fix this problem, I view it as quite unacceptable and it keeps me from recommending linux to anyone [I'm a consultant]

Again this is slackware 10.1 and I can't download any other versions as I do not have high speed

Out of curiousity post your hardware configuration.

datavirtue 01-23-2007 12:14 PM

hardware specs

Dell 500SC Server
PIII 1266Mhz
512mb RAM
Adaptec 39160 Ultra-160 SCSI
One Seagate 18 gig 10krpm hd
One CD-RW drive on IDE Primary 0 Cable Select (have tried Master) and both channels
4gig Windows 2000 Server partition
linux swap 800mb
linux 6gig
Diamon Sound Card
USB Add on card (4 port with one internal)
There doesn't appear to be any RAID selections in the PC BIOS but I have not checked SCSI Select BIOS (adaptec BIOS)

how do I access my SCSI hard drive from the prompt before slackware setup?
