SCSI controler card selection & drive ID help
 

I have 3 18.2 gig scsi drives laying around that came out of my Proliant server set up for hotswap. The drives have the 80pin connectors on them. I want to build a low cost file server and use these drives, but I dont know much about scsi. I am getting the 80pin to 68 pin adaptors that have the standard power plugs on them but I'm not sure about what kind of controller to get. From what I can tell there are different types of 68 pin controllers. I have read about ultrawide, ultra320, LVD etc. but I really dont know the differance. The drives say ultrawide on them so can I just use any 68pin ultrawide adaptor? Also, I have seen mention of terminators, is that something else I need? I need something really low cost for this but I want something that will definately work under Linux so any suggestions are welcome. I will probably be running Redhat 8.0 on this box if that makes a difdferance.

Just my two cents worth. I like Tekram. Its cheaper then Adaptec and compatable with linux. Try the ultra 160 card. Each drive will need a different ID. The boot drive ID is normally 0. You will need to set the terminator (jumper pin on the drive) to on the last drive of the chain.

If you have LVD drives then you will need a LVD controller. Modern controllers are LVD capable. You can use any UW controller with your drives.
