scsi cable question

Hi

i've a adaptec 29160 with a single ultra 160 18gb maxtor atlas 10k3 (fairly pointless I know).

recently I spotted the driver stating it was using fast-80-wide sync and immediately decided I must be using a crappy cable and bought a 2nd hand ultra160 cable.

it arrived and i unplugged my existing cable, took off the terminator and noticed it said u320, it was then i remembered it was a ultra320 cable.

now i assumed the ultra160 cable would not affect performance, but it does, the adaptec uses half transfer the rate with it, which turns out to be slower than my ide drive.

so what's that all about then?

says cable does not effect performance.

I was trying to figure this out but could not find what I was thinking the issue could be. But this is my thoughts. A LVD U160 terminator terminates with a specific resistance and maybe a U320 cable resistance is in the terminator is slightly different. Same goes for U640 controllers. This way the controller can set the main bus line based on resistance it sees. My only thoughts but at the moment cannot confirm this.
