SCSI BIOS not Installed

I'm a 'newbie', but I don't know if this is necessarily a 'newbie' problem.

I cannot get an IBM eServer xSeries 232 (purchased through an auction) to recognize my brand new IBM Ultra 160 'Hot-Swap'HD. In fact, I can't get SLES 10 installed on it either. I get two error messages during boot-up: 'No SCSI Boot Device Found', and 'SCSI BIOS not Installed'.

My machine shows that I am using Adaptec SCSI BIOS v.3.10 with AIC 7899. My '232' came with a tape drive and I've read that it may be the source of the problem. But I disconnected it and ended up with the same result. I still can't get past the 'partitioning' portion of the set-up.

What have I failed to do correctly?

The messages you get at boot indicate that the SCSI controller is not recognizing the hard drive, so of course Linux can't see it.

Is the drive actually spinning up? Try a different power connector and SCSI cable. Is the device ID properly set? Is there a configuration mode for the SCSI controller that you can enter during boot? You may need to change the configuration that it was last set to. Otherwise, either the drive or the controller may be having a problem.

It turns out that 'Mr. Pretty Darn Stupid' here didn't know enough to recognize that channel 'B' of the SCSI controller was detached! In desperation, I had tried Windows XP Pro to get my '232' to function properly -- if just temporarily. It is not installed. Now that it seems to be running okay, my only dilemma is deciding whether or not to go 'full Linux' or keep one foot still planted in the Windows 'world'.

I've just decided to keep XP installed until I get familiarized with SLES 10.

A heart-felt thanks to those of you who responded. It's good to know that when you're in deep trouble there are good-hearted Linux people with the 'smarts' to help a 'newbie' like me, out.

I am having the similar problem with my eserver 232. It is giving the exact error while booting and I am stuck there. Could you please explain, how did you fix the problem. The cable which was disconnected inside your machine, where is it located and where should it be connected? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello! Iam to a newbie with the same issue... Well kind of ! :)

I have recently purchased a IBM eServer xSeries 232 trough an auction and i was on my way installing Linux (Debian) and was wondering what way to partition my drives, i decided to go with "manual" but after a while i changed my mind and deicded that the Automatic function would be best afterall. So i press the escape button wich did not take me backwards but instead forwards in the process so i decided to cancel the installation. Said and done i cancel the installation and reboot my computer to begin installation again but now i get these errors;

"No SCSI Boot Device Found"
"SCSI BIOS not Installed"

Then 2 seconds passes and i hear two beeps and then the Debian installer comes on and says "Press F1 for help or Enter to install:_"
But the machine is completely frozen! :(

It seems like almost all that has had this problem and written about it online had some trouble with cables but i dont think thats where my issue is at.
My setup does not even use the onboard SCSI A & SCSI B connections, it appears to use a PCI controller card.
