Hi.

I am using Turbolinux 10 Desktop (kernel 2.6.0). I would like to add a SCSI hard disk to my system so /home can be mounted onto that drive instead of being part of the primary ATA disk. I am hoping this will enhance the overall performance of my computer as well as making it easier to back up the /home directory.

Now, I need some recommendations on the SCSI adapter card that works with kernel 2.6. I'd imagine Adaptec makes good SCSI cards, but I've never worked with SCSI before and don't want to make my decisions based upon my own incomplete and (probably) wrong assumptions.

I have no plans to enable RAID or anything... just want to use a SCSI hard disk. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

select a scsi card/drive you will afford. i use a adaptec 2940 which is quite old but fast enough for my use. scsi will give you a speed gain, but by far not that much as 5 years ago. google for "scsi ide benchmark" for some cards and drives. have a look at the kernel-source to see which are supported.

i like the durability of scsi drives. since cpupower is quite inexpensive today, speed is (was) a io thing here (there).

Just another thought for you, the LSIU160 cards are good host adapters and they are pretty inexpensive right now. They also have the advantage of working in a 64 bit pci slot should your motherboard support them.
