Screen Resolution problem - only one (sub-optimal) available - "800 x 600"

1) I have a Windows 10 "Gamer" pc, specifications:
ULTRA FAST i7 Desktop Gaming Computer PC / 1TB / 16GB RAM / ? GTX 1660 ? / Windows 10
CPU: 4 cores
HDD: 1TB
RAM: 16GB
Base speed: 3.4 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030 - 10GB memory

2) I installed a 500 GB SSD and used it exclusively for the installation of Linux-Ubuntu-20.04
(Windows 10 still present, but on the 1TB HDD).

3) HOWEVER, the screen resolution is not optimal - "800 x 600 / 4:3".
No other options are available if I try the drop-down menu.

4) I should be most grateful if someone could give advice as to how I can arrange for the usual range of resolutions that are available on my friends ubuntu pc - i.e. all the way up to 1920 x 1080 (16:9).

Thank you for your kind attention

I would suggest installing nvidia properietary video drivers.

Maybe you didn't check the box to allow proprietary drivers when you were doing your initial installation, so make sure that's enabled in "Software & Updates" (see attached) then just run:

Code:
sudo ubuntu-drivers install
which will autoinstall the best drivers available. then reboot and be good.

Many thanks.
I have done that but get the message:
"Media change: please insert the disk labelled Ubuntu 20.04 LTS _Focal Fossa_ ... etc"
I don't have this disk - I installed Ubuntu using a live USB drive.

I have opened the App "Software and Updates" - the last tab "Additional Drivers" offers an array of NVIDIA drivers but they are greyed-out and do not allow me to select any of them.

Many thanks for your help. Greatly appreciated.
Duncan

Something went wrong with your installation, apparently, which is weird. It shouldn't be looking on the install media after installation, and even if you plug in the usb it wont be mounted the way it expects so won't find it.

Enigma9o7 - Not to worry - I have managed to fix the problem:

Went to "Software and Updates" app, opened the "Ubuntu Software" tab and unchecked the <Cdrom with Ubuntu 20.04 'Focal Fossa'> box; ran the "sudo ubuntu-drivers install" command line again and, Hey Presto, fixed!

Thank you very much for your help!
Best
Duncan

Yer welcome, glad it worked! If I had looked at my own screenshot a little harder I woulda noticed that I didn't have that checked at the bottom and woulda suggested you uncheck it! If you edit the first post, you can add [SOLVED] to the title if you want.
