screen blinking with i915... stuck for months... about to throw away my laptop
I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64bit on my new Laptop.
The problem is that screen keeps blinking like rainbow.(blinks both in X and console) This is what happened on my laptop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOY4RDhi8sY My workaround was editing /etc/default/grub. Code: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text i915.modeset=0" But that wasn't a perfect solution, because I can't adjust screen brightness and laptop becomes so slow when I play graphical games after that. So I want to know if there is a better solution. here is my hardware information: Code:

I told you, it's sound on video. I can even hear the sound on that recording. Get the sound quiet and see if that changes things. Also post your driver details. Video these days relies on mesa, the kernel driver, xorg server, libdrm, libpixman, and perhaps a few other things.Correct versions are important. And get the sound to shut up. It sounds like you are out in the wind somewhere recording that. |
The sound is not from the laptop that was from outside of the window. here's new video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPRci098U7c
and Code:

Ok, that's not too bad. The vertical synch is slipping, by the look of that.
post the output of xrandr --verbose Edit: I would not throw that laptop out - you said you were ready to. If you still feel inclined to do so, pack it up and send it to me ;-) |
haha here's the output
Code:
xrandr --verbose |

Useful information
BTW I tried with other kernel parameters such as i915.reset=false , i915.enable_hangcheck=false And they had same effects with i915.modeset=0 Screen blinking disappeared but screen brightness adjusting was disabled and gaming graphics became so slow(I guess hardware video acceleration was disabled) |

Do you mean i915.modeset=1 ?
That doesnt work for screen blinking |
If the problem is what I think it is, I only just saw the video so it may be different, you have to try various settings each one has a different effect. Some people use nomodeset, others use i915.modeset=1, while others use i915.modeset=0
If the issue isn't what I think it is are you using the correct firmware? |
Just looking at xrandr, you're running at 60 Hz. There is no conceivable reason for the pictire slipping in hardware, so I presume it is a software problem.
|
Umm.. how to check firmware?
|
I tried Slackware Debian Arch but screen still blinks I think this is kernel-related problem
|
Are they all using the same kernel?
|
Maybe not, I also tried latest kernel from kernel.org using Xubuntu but nothing seems to be changed
