School paper about Linux OS HW requirements

Hi!

I am currently enrolled in a masters program and am taking an Operating Systems class. I am on the Linux OS team for a team paper project. My section is Hardware Requirements. I thought this would be easy. I was wrong.

Here is the question posed by my teacher:

The report must specify the minimal, common, and optimal requirements for your O/S to run on a server and desktop machine. For the server, you are free to make your own assumptions. Be as specific as you can about the hardware specifications.

She would also like me to include a summary table as well.

Now I have sort of been able to find minimum hw requirements but common and optimal? I realize it probably depends on a lot of factors but I'm wondering if anyone has enough experience with different hw configurations that could provide a down and dirty list.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'd say that was tough, as each server requirement are driven by what its doing.

Oracle eats up alot...anything under 2gigs just doesn't cut it where I work...but for serving up DNS requests, i think we use 512megs.

I could only suggest that you pick a function for this server (Oracle/apache, etc) and check out that apps minimum requirements.
