Scanner Installation, Mandrake 9.0, UMAX Astra 2400SCSI
 

Heya, Im trying to set up my UMAX 2400S, On a SCSI interface. The SCSI (Adaptec AHA-1542) is installed fine. So, I run the Mandrake Control Panel Scanner Wizard, it asks me the scanner model, I select it, click ok, and the Wizard says its fine and installed, run XSANE to use the scanner. However, XSANE reports that there are no scanners installed.
It does surprise me that the scanner wizard doesnt ask for the connection type or nething, so it seems that its the scanner installer not setting up the scanner.
Is there a different nice GUI installer i can use, or can someone explain how to set it up manually? thanx

It shouldn't ask you for the scanner model. It should have already been detected by the scsi module load. Just make sure you have installed sane/xsane and the devel rpms. If it's detected by scsi- you can check by doing cdrecord --scanbus, and then sane-scanner.

If cdrecord doesn't see it, it's not installed properly(wrong scsi ID, not plugged in). If sane doesn't see it, odds are there isn't a driver for that model. In which case you'll have to read up on sane's support for your particular scanner.

ok, thanks. So I connected the Scanner at boot-up and it worked fine. Thats cool, but is it necessary to plug it in at boot up? is it poss to reload the module? Thanks though, its working well now.

SCSI devices need to be connected at all the times. The bus requires a terminator which should be on the end of the chain or if built in, set active on the last device. You also shouldn't unplug / plug SCSI devices with the power on either.

The SCSI controller only scans the bus on boot up so reloading the module will not help. Iif you turn the power switch off and back on it might not work correctly unless you reboot.
