SBLive 5.1 problem

Hi Guys,
I have just dropped my old SBLive into my linux box and I can not get 5.1 sound. I was previously using the onboard AC97.
Everything is fine if a stereo source is played, I even get sound from the rear speakers.
As soon a a 5.1 source e.g. a DVD is played of even speaker-test. The app which is trying to play it throws a wobbly and claims that the device isn't ready or in the case of speaker-test that a file or files are missing.
I reckon there may be devices missing from /dev/. Could someone help.

Try changing the sound output plugin of your multimedia apps to alsa.

As far as I know I am using alsa, having deactivated arts and manually installed alsa and the kernel module. I've even tried alsaconf which seems happy detecting the card etc. I've set up the config files from the alsa soundcard matrix and am pretty stumped. I've deleted the old alsa section from modprobe.conf and it was no help.
P.S. it is only stereo sources that play.
