SB Live! 5.1: only right channel sound on green jack
Hi!
I have a sb live! 5.1 pci sound card. When I attach a speaker to the green jack, I can only hear sounds on the right speaker (no, the speaker is alright, it works good, with any other sound device). Running 'speaker-test -c 2', it says:
speaker-test 1.0.14
Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 64 to 16384
Period size range from 16 to 16384
Using max buffer size 16384
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 4096
was set buffer_size = 16384
0 - Front Left
1 - Front Right
which is good, but when it says 0 - Front Left, the sound is loud on the right speaker, and when it says 1 - Front Right, the sound is "normal" on the right speaker. Left speaker is dump all the time. Here comes another strange thing: when I attach the speakers to the black (I think rear), I get a stereo sound, so it's okay.
And the worst, that it is distro- and platform independent...
I've tried it in a different machine with windows xp, and it's the same...
Third strange thing is: i have a tv tuner card, attached to the aux in, but I can only hear sound through the green jack, and I can't hear it through the black jack.
I've bought this card used...
Can anyone help me?
On Fedora like distros that usually links to PCM/Wave and Master has no effect on it. I think that it is the Analog/Digital connector, but i use it in analog mode.
There is also another connector that should link to headphones, but i have never got it to work yet.
Code:
$ lspci | grep Multimedia
00:0b.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 0a)
$ speaker-test -c 2
speaker-test 1.0.14rc4
Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels

Using max buffer size 16384
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 4096
was set buffer_size = 16384
0 - Front Left
1 - Front Right
Time per period = 5.631713
Another thing to try is wiggling the speaker connector when plugged in the jack, as the speaker connector my have loose wiring. If you find that you get crackles and maybe sound then time to cut yourself a new connector. Try plugging the speakers into something else, which is a known good source, like an ipod or other mp3 player.
As I said, I've tried the speakers with an mp3 player, and they work great.
Using the black jack would be good for me, but (as I said, again) I can't hear the tv tuner's sound, which is connected to AUX IN on the sound card.
Its most likely the hardware on the card thats gone. Not sure what to suggest, apart from try and pick another one up.
If you look around maybe a cheap soundcard could be found to replace it, unless you had a specific requirement for a Live (home studio, 5.1 dolby, etc).
If I recall correctly, the pin layout on a jack is
<--|-|-- with the < being the left +, the first | being the right +, and the 2nd | being the - (common for both channels)
In which case, it may be that the jack isn't plugged in completely, thus only making contact with the left + and the -
Please ensure jack is plugged in completely.
Seeing this is cross-platform, alternatively, unless you plug the jack straight in the card, it may be that the lead that connects your sound blaster with your green plug socket is broken or not properly connected.
Best way to resolve this issue is to use logic.
1. Test speakers by using other sound source ( verifies cable and speakers)
2. Test sound card by using other speakers (verifies sound card)
1. "As I said, I've tried the speakers with an mp3 player, and they work great."
2. I also have headphones, and it's the same (also tried this with other devices).
Maybe there is some problem with jumpers?...
The jack is pushed in completely. If i just pudh it half way, I can hear stereo sound, but it's weak, and seems like mono...
