SB Audigy LS (modprobe error) no such device

I've been racking my brain trying to get a Creative Audigy LS soundcard to work. Here are the pertinent system details:

Athlon VIA KT266A MSI mainboard
Plug and Play aware OS=NO
Slackware 9.0 /2.4.22 kernel
kernel options related
soundcore=M (tried building into kernel and as module)
emu10k1=N
pci access mode=BIOS (tried "any" as well)

I have downloaded the .20 drivers from SourceForge. Compiled and installed
successfully. I also tried v.19 after .20 didn't work. I tried on my old 2.4.20 kernel
before going with 2.4.22 kernel.

After installation, I modprobe ac97_codec successfully. When I modprobe emu10k1
I get the following errror:

root@darkstar:/home/djsjr# modprobe -v ac97_codec
/sbin/insmod /lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/ac97_codec.o
Using /lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/ac97_codec.o
Symbol version prefix ''
root@darkstar:/home/djsjr# modprobe -v emu10k1
/sbin/insmod /lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o
Using /lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o
Symbol version prefix ''
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o: init_module: No such device
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o: Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parame ters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o: insmod /lib/modules/ 2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o: insmod emu10k1 faile d

I've moved the PCI card to all five slots with the same results.

I gave up on the Creative OS drivers and then decided to try ALSA
I got the same results: "no such device"

The card works fine under Windows XP Home.

I've read that the only difference between the Audigy LS and Audigy MP3/Gamer is the lack of IEEE1394.

I'm stumped.

Dennis

I still haven't figured this one out. I downloaded and installed the beta audigy LS drivers from 4Front. It recognizes the card and I have sound, although poor quality when compared to my old Live! card. Apparently the Audigy LS is different and new enough to not work properly with the Creative OpenSource or ALSA drivers. ANY ideas?

Message from Creative Labs Re: Audigy LS

Today I received this reply from creative labs.

Yes -- EMU10K1 drivers won't work with the LS (that's the only retail
Audigy that it _won't_ work with). The only Linux drivers that I know of
for that card are from 4Front (www.opensound.com) -- they're commercial
closed-source drivers.

BTW,

I installed the opensound drivers (they're in BETA) and they sucked big time.
Lots of lag and instability issues on my system configuration. I finally gave up and
re-installed my LIVE! and shelved the audigy LS until linux drivers emerge.
