Sax2 / Xserver / Monitor woes
Good day!
It seems I accidentally set my monitor resolution too high in Sax2 and now when I boot up and try to start X the monitor shuts off to protect itself. This has left me in a dilemma, as I can't start Sax2 to change the resolution back because it starts X and uses the wrong resolution.. (I thought you could run sax2 from the command line without starting x ??) I am using suse 8.2 and tried running yast from the command line, it works, but there seems to be no way to change the actual monitor settings/resolution, just if you want a graphical or text interface). How can I change this back to 800x600 from the command line? some history-- actually this monitor, a gateway vx1100 is capable of running 1024x768 and even higher, I just can't get it to work under suse correctly. My monitor is listed in the setup, but if you set it for anything higher than 800x600 the monitor shuts down. I even tried entering the vertical and horizontal frequencies manually, and still nothing. Any suggestions on this front as well? I know the monitor is capable of this as windows configures it correctly. nobody wants to run 800x600 on a 21" monitor! :-> your time and help is greatly appreciated! thanks! Judah |
Partial Success
Well,
I got up system back up and running. the screendepth was set to 24 instead of 16. However, in my journey of trying to figure out what was wrong, I googled and found a message some guy had posted that has the same monitor as me. His Horizsync and Vertrefresh numbers were different. His was Horizsync 31-108 & Vertrefresh 50-160. Mine was 28-108 and 50-152. So I tried his numbers and different screendepths to no avail. I noticed the section with modelines as well. After the resolution is listed a number with a decimal point. is this the Horizsync or Vertrefresh number?? Is the modeline section generated with Sax2 when you set up the monitor or is this a "preset" configuration when you choose your monitor type in SaX2? I really want to get my monitor working at higher resolutions. I believe it is actually capable of doing 1280x1024 and maybe even higher. here is the monitor part of my XF86Config file.. You don't need modelines any more :-)
Pop over to www.x.org and download a recent version. In my experience Sax2 is a crock and should be avoided. Configuring X with one of the built in tools (xorgconfig) is not at all difficult. If you do upgrade, maek sure you do a litle googling about setting your default window manager as the upgradw will probably have you boot to wdm rather than gnome/kde. |
I would like to try to get this setup working...
Does anyone have any suggestions ?? |
Maybe you would be able to run the monitor under a higher resolution with a newer X server?
i.e a bug with the version you are trying to use just an idea. |
the default depth is set to 16 and your highest resolution@ 16 is 800x600.
30 to 108 KHz; Vertical, 50 to 152 Hz......max resolution is 1600x1200 login as root in failsafe and enter "sax2" to run sax w/o gui.enter custom settings for h and v frequencies sometimes sax needs to be played with to get the settings you want.......just run it a few times, restarting the x-server in between. *edit*just noticed the SIS 650 vid card.as a side note.....there was a reason i gave mine away and replaced it with an nvidia |
