Satellite tuner error fills HDD log

Hi forum,

my beloved long running Home Theater PC developed an annoying behaviour of filling the log files
+ messages
+ syslog
+ kern.log
quickly to a degree that prevents from starting X afterwards.

The log entry that repeats is this:
Code:
Oct 13 18:12:13 hostname kernel: [ 494.255061] bt878(0): irq PPERR risc_pc=7b769208
Oct 13 18:12:13 hostname kernel: [ 494.255073] bt878(0): irq PPERR risc_pc=7b769008
Oct 13 18:12:13 hostname kernel: [ 494.255092] bt878(0): irq PPERR risc_pc=7b769010
Oct 13 18:12:13 hostname kernel: [ 494.255109] bt878(0): irq PPERR risc_pc=7b769010
Oct 13 18:12:13 hostname kernel: [ 494.255127] bt878(0): irq PPERR risc_pc=7b769010
Oct 13 18:12:13 hostname kernel: [ 494.255147] bt878(0): irq PPERR risc_pc=7b769010
Oct 13 18:12:13 hostname kernel: [ 494.255164] bt878(0): irq PPERR risc_pc=7b769010
Oct 13 18:12:13 hostname kernel: [ 494.255186] bt878(0): irq PPERR risc_pc=7b769010
The number at the end of the line rises from 008 to 200 and then starts over at 008.

The bt878 part is a strong hint that my Pinnacle PCTV Sat is the problem here. Furthermore the problem only arises while using the PCTV Sat, be it in MythTV or VLC.

Possibly connected is an error that keeps popping up on every console (regardless of using the PCTV Sat or not)
Code:
kernel:do_IRQ: 1.92 No irq handler for vector (irq -1)
Which makes using the console nearly impossible. That's why this message is suppressed by kernel parameters
Code:
pci=nomsi,noems
Continually truncating the log files is not an option because the amount of writing will kill the harddisk pretty quickly.

How can I track down the log-filling error?

Here is some information about my PC:
Code:
$uname -r
4.9.212-antix.1-amd64-smp

According to the driver's source code, the PPERR message is generated when verbose logging is enabled.

modinfo reveals that verbose logging is the default, and that you can disable it by loading the module with parameter verbose=0:
Code:
# modinfo bt878
....
parm: verbose:verbose startup messages, default is 1 (yes) (int)
That would be a workaround, but of course whatever hardware or configuration issue causes the error still exists.

The source code doesn't document what the error flag BT878_APPERR means. Information about the device and a mailing list can be found on the Linux TV web site, but I see nothing about this particular flag. I would try contacting the developer, whose name is in the source files.
