sata2 compatibilty with linux and many questions

I plan on getting a sata2 hard drive, and using a regular sata controller with it using Linux. Sata controllers are supposed to be reverse compatible with sata2 hard drives, however I do know of one person who was having trouble getting that to work at a television broadcasting company. Has anyone tried it? Is there anything I should be aware of that won't work in Linux, so I will know not to buy it? sata2 controllers are out of my price range right now, and I do not have pci express. I also do not want to get external drives.

Wow! This looks remarkably like you're thread over here, it even has a helpful answer!

SATA-3g drives work fine with SATA controllers, I have a drive with a jumper option to limit it to 150Mb/s so if the drive has that make sure you use it.

Why do you want a jumper that can limit the speed? Why would you want to do that? I'm a noob at sata.
