SATA DVDRW problem playing DVD's

I just bought a LITE-ON SATA DVD rewriter SH-16A7S. The drive seems to be recognised OK and when mounted I can see the files on the DVD, but if I try and play a movie in Kaffeine I get an error telling me the source can't be read. When I use Konqueror to browse the CD, the files on the disc are shown properly in the mounted directory but I get errors in the dmesg. Here's the dmesg:

Code:
[17214917.592000] UDF-fs INFO UDF 0.9.8.1 (2004/29/09) Mounting volume 'GHOST_IN_THE_SHELL', timestamp 2003/08/01 05:23 (1000)

[17214937.016000] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 9569172
and it's listed in fstab as:
/dev/sr0 /media/cdrom1 auto nouser,noauto,atime,rw,nodev,noexec,nosuid 0 0

I'm running Kubuntu Edgy but I get the same erro using the latest versions of Knoppix and Sabayon too.
It all works fine in windows so I guess the DVDRW and disc are ok.
Does anyone have any ideas how to get it to work? Maybe I should have stuck with IDE!

Are you trying to watch a DVD movie? If you have an original disc it might be encrypted. Otherwise it's something wrong with Kaffeine, I had troubles with it too.

If your DVD is encrypted (copy protected) AND where you live breaking those copy protections with brute force is not illegal you can install libdvdcss.

I should have mentioned I also have an IDE DVD/CDwriter combo and that plays the dvd ok. So I think the disc isn't encrypted and Kaffeine is working ok. It's just the SATA DVD writer having problems.

I'm not sure, but I think Kaffeine can play only from one drive. At least you can specify only one DVD device ...
