sata controller rom

hi-

can someone please check this out and see if i have got this
right. i just got the wrong drive sent to me so now i have
to get a sata controller. i never bought one.

my chipset works with sata-150. but i think i can use sata-300 with an
updated sata controller rom. i'd like to buy one.
so when i search for sata controller all of these pci cards
pop up on the net. on the card they have ports for the data
cables for sata.

so i think i have to get a sata controller that will work with sata
3.0 so i can use my sata-300 drive. i then plug the sata 300
drive cables into this controller right? then i can stop trying
to find these non-existent 150 drives. i tried to order a 150
drive and they sent me a 300.

so then i guess that just like the graphics card instead of using
the sis chipset integrated functionality on the board everything is through the add-on card.

i check that controller card for linux compatibility
too like i did when i bought a nvidia graphics card.

thanks for any assistance,
jim

here is the article that talks about my chipset not working nice
with 3.0.

"Backward compatibility between SATA 1.5 Gbit/s controllers and SATA 3.0 Gbit/s devices was important, so SATA/300's autonegotiation sequence is designed to fallback to SATA/150 speed (1.5 Gbit/s rate) when in communication with such devices. In practice, some older SATA controllers do not properly implement SATA speed negotiation. Affected systems require user-intervention to manually set the SATA 3.0 Gbit/s peripherals to 1.5 Gbit/s mode, generally through the use of a jumper.[2] Known faulty chipsets include the VIA VT8237 and VT8237R south bridges, and the VIA VT6420 and VT6421L standalone SATA controllers.[3] SiS's 760 and 964 chipsets also initially exhibited this problem, though it can be rectified with an updated SATA controller ROM."

re: sata controller rom

hi-

well i didnt know what i wanted to do.
keep the drive and get the sata controller card
or return and shop for a sata-150.

i started reading about jumpers.

i said what the heck i will keep the drive and try
to set one of these jumpers.

i opened up the drive box and right on the manual page
it talks about my chipset being the oddball and shows
me how to set the jumper to force the 1.5 transfer rate.

cool!!!!
thank you,
jim
