SATA Boot Question

Hi,

My system is:

MB Gigabyte GA-8KNXP
Proc P4 3.0Ghz 800
ICH5R Raid 0 2-WD Raptor SATA (Windows XP system)
IDE0 Maxtor 120GB ide drive 1st partition NTFS, Following partitions RH9
IDE1 Nothing
IDE2 Yamaha CDRW
IDE3 Generic DVDrom

PATA Raid disabled in bios (ITE)
SATA Raid disabled in bios (Silicon Image)

I have the bios set to boot 1st from the floppy, then from the SCSI, which is how it recognizes the SATA ICH5R raid. To boot Linux I have been using a boot disk.

When I installed RH9 I used GRUB. I have tried editing grub.conf with various places for finding the Windows with no luck. ( HD1-HD4) I don't even know if it is possible to point GRUB at the ICH5R raid or not. My Linux shows up on HD0,1 as expected.

Any ideas are welcome.

Thanks

How do you have your ICH5 controller set up? Is it in RAID functionality or not?

I can't even get Linux to install on my Abit IC7-G

George,

My Linux is on the regular IDE master, partition 2.

For the ICH5R bios settings I have:

On-Chip SATA (Auto)
SATA Port0 configure as (SATA Port0)
SATA Port1 configure as (SATA Port1)
SATA RAID Function (Enabled).

If you select:

On-Chip SATA (Manual)
SATA Port0 can be (IDE Pri. Master) or
(IDE Pri. Slave) or
(IDE Sec. Master) or
(IDE Sec. Slave) or
(SATA Port0) or
(SATA Port1).

It looks like from your post that you're putting the Linux on the SATA Raid0 which best I can tell is still only supported in Windows.
That was why I put mine on the IDE drive. I'd just like to boot all from GRUB instead of needing a boot disk. Whenever and ifever there is support in Linux I'll move mine onto the ICH5R Raid.

Supposedly Intel is working on the ICH5R Linux drivers, but I don't expect them anytime soon.

In any case, I just have to go buy a EIDE drive Sucks.

I have made a recent discovery that may be helpful. This is on my GA-8KNXP.

With the Bios boot order set as SCSI, HD0, Floppy and WinXP on the ICH5R as RAID0 and Linux on HD0 during boot pressing the spacebar appears to cause the ICH5R ROM to be skipped and the board then boots from HD0. Now I can get to my Linux without any boot disk or cd.
