sata-1 PCI controller many questions

I've finally found what I've been looking for, but before I get it, I
want to make sure it works with Linux (Ubuntu). I couldn't find the brand name on
HCL at www.linuxquestions.org. This has very good reviews. I read them
all and only one person said anything about Linux, but I want to be
sure before I buy it. Also, the product says it supports many types of Windows, but it does not say anything about Linux.

I'll be using it with this.

This already came in the mail.

I am going to look for sata cables. Is there anything else I need? I've
never used sata before, and my motherboard does not have any support
for it. Sorry for asking too many questions. One more question. Should I get this instead? It looks like the same thing, but it is open box and has no reviews. Why is it sold as open box? Is there any reason I shouldn't get it instead? I don't need the drivers CD if it just contains drivers for Windows, and I could get them from the internet anyways.

Open box usually means it is a return. For whatever reason it did not work for the first person. This does not necessarily mean that it is defective. Whoever ordered it may not have had an open slot that it would work in or it may have been physically too long etc.

Be aware that on some systems booting to sata can be problematic.

I payed the extra money to get a card that is not open box. I can return it easier now. Is this problem a problem with bios, or is it a problem with Linux not being able to boot from a sata drive? I did research and found out the card I bought is supported in Linux before I bought it. I even got email replied from the company saying so.

Booting to a sata drive can be problematic on some systems in lots of ways. It is relatively speaking new technology so all the hiccups have not being completely worked out. All I was saying is that if you have problems it may be easier to boot from a pata drive and run off the sata drive. In most cases this is the path of least resistance for using sata if one has problems. You should certainly try booting to the sata drive but if you have problems the above is a work around.
