Santa Cruz Sound Card does not work even though i have installed the correct drivers

See my sig for system info.
In a nutshell SuSE Linux 2.1 ftp install
Santa Cruz Sound Card using CS 4614/22/24 driver
5.1 surround sound
The speakers are dell 5.1 surround sound with a subwoofer bigger that my pc tower.

First, I am a complete linux :newbie: . Detailed solutions would be nice but not necessary.
Now to the problem. I installed SuSE over ftp two days ago. I had the resolution problem (fixed) and a few others. After thinking that i was finally settled in I go to watch a video on the net. The video is crisp clear, 1600 x 1200 resolution explains that. But the sound comes out only from one speaker. I decided to reinstall the sound card. I picked the exact same card that was preconfigured and all of the sudden none of my 5 speakers work.
I reinstall it several times hoping for success. Hey it worked in windows right ;) . If I left out any important info please tell me. NOTE: I have not tried sound from the dvd. The microphone does work.

Thank You

You will need to use snd-cs46xx module. Use alsamixer or kmix to adjust the sound. I prefer that you use alsamixer.

If you do not know that you are using snd-cs46xx, type /sbin/lsmod and post the output here. Also post the output of amixer.

wesleylance 03-21-2005 12:07 PM

Same problem here

I have the same problem. Mono sound output.
I am using SuSe 91 Pro and the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz.
I try time and time again to reset it reconfigure it and delete/reinstall it, to nothing.

It seems strange that the sound driver would even consider mono output.. I mean, it is 2005 for pete's sake.
Monaural sound is quite the outdated design.

Electro 03-21-2005 09:28 PM

Its probably a SUSE thing. Mandrake and Knoppix can output up to six channels. Also when I specify oss for snd-46xx module, all media players can output up to six channels with out specifying surround51 and it can mix up to 32 audio streams using oss. Sorry, I can not help you because you did not post the output of amixer.

BTW, the meaning of stereo is outputting audio into two mono channels.

wesleylance 03-28-2005 12:38 PM

LOL

>>Sorry, I can not help you because you did not post the output of amixer.

I do not know how to do that

>>BTW, the meaning of stereo is outputting audio into two mono channels.

LOL that is hilarious. I wonder how in the world you think I dont know that.. sorry to be rude
but that is just hilarious. The only people I know who would not comprehend that fact are
women and rednecks. Sorry. I really am. I cant help but laugh at that.

Electro 03-29-2005 01:02 AM

Sheesh, do I have to explain everything in detail.

In a terminal program like xterm, rxvt, etc

Type /sbin/lsmod > modulelst.txt

Type amixer > amixer.txt

Then load those files in a GUI program like gedit, kedit, kwrite. I assume you already know how to highlight text, copy it, paste it, so I should not have to explain that in detail. Use vB code to keep the format of the text.

BTW, it is possible to get two channels or more from one channel, but it is hard to distinguish what sounds are comming from a certain channel. Also it is hard to get decent results because the designer have to count for the room's acoustics and the quickness of the speaker driver.

wesleylance 03-30-2005 03:15 PM

I am really sorry about my assaninity
A few too many beers.

BTW, I still dont know what you are talking about.
I have been using Linux for about 2 weeks now and
am extremely unfamiliar with anything but the GUI.

:-( call me ignorant, which I am, but I just need to learn
what in the world I am doing

Greg Haynes 03-30-2005 03:22 PM

explanation from a fellow noob

run the two commands he gave you, that will put the info we need into two text files. Go into your home folder in your GUI and copy and paste the two text files into a post.

wesleylance 04-01-2005 10:23 PM

ok

Will do that as soon as I restart the computer and
get back into Linux (unfortunately I still rely on Winblows
to do certain things). But anyway, thanks for the help!
As soon as I can, I will get that ?output? posted here.

;-)

Strange
the mixer states stereo but this thing says mono all over it!
I am very confused and unsure as to what to do!
Thanks for your help, in advance!

Electro 04-02-2005 11:28 PM

Increase DAC and ADC to 100%. You should then get 2 to 6 channels depending on the source. If it does not, download ALSA at its site and read the documentation how to compile and install the modules (drivers). I suggest using Mandrake 10.1 or Fedora Core 2. SUSE just does not do it the Linux way.

To record audio make sure DAC is not set to capture or else the audio that you are playing at the time will also be recorded. Select any input (Line, Mic, CD-ROM, Video) to be recorded. Next adjust capture, so that the sound monitor is sound recording program does not go into the red region. Audacity is good audio recording program that is easy to use.

wesleylance 04-09-2005 01:18 AM

Ok, just cause I am an ignorant user.. how do I do that?
I tried the mixer that supposedly outputs that, but it does not remedy the situation
or should I do it the command line way? I am not familiar with how to do the
commands, then. Thanks for your assistance! It is greatly appreciated!

Electro 04-09-2005 04:00 PM

Sheesh, use alsamixer and use the arrow keys to go all the way to the right. Keep alsamixer running while playing sound to adjust any settings in alsamixer. After you like the the settings, hit ESC and type su to switch user. You may have to use su -. This will switch to root. Then type root's password. Type alsactl store.

BTW, keep an open mind and be resourceful. Ignorant gets you no where.

wesleylance 04-11-2005 07:47 AM

I tried that and it still kept outputting mono. I tried switching the card to another slot
and now I get no sound output. I have a feeling I might be better off pluggin in my
old sound blaster 128 and using it.
In any case, thanks for the tips and I at least have learned a few things I did not
know before! ;-)
