sane/xsane can't find usb scanner

I just installed debian, and upgraded to kernel 2.6.7. Set sources.list to testing.

I did an apt-get install for sane and xsane. But when I run xsane, I get a message that it can't find any devices.

lsusb doesn't work for me.

--------------------
# lsusb
bash: lsusb: command not found
# apt-get install lsusb
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
E: Couldn't find package lsusb
