I'm afraid I have no more suggestions. My card readers mount fine, and always have. I'm on Debian, but I've used a number of other distros over the years, and I haven't seen this issue. I hope you solve it, and share the solution.

I have just created and loaded a live-bootable-USB of Manjaro without installing. I plugged in the sandisk reader and it mounted the card without a problem. Coming back to mint it still does not see the reader, same for the RPI.
Baffled is an understatement
Any more ideas and suggestions are more than welcome.
Cheers

Post the lsusb output with the reader plugged in while running manjaro. I wonder if is a USB 3 software problem. Unfortunately there are a few variables to ponder between the two sysfems and wonder if some update is to blame.

Hi MichaelK, Unfortunately I can't reproduce the mount. I tried again and again for a couple of hours but no joy. On the other hand I am now receiving 2 error messages on boot and shutdown. I filmed an out of focus instance and I could see that it has something to do with:
Code:
zfs-mount.service failed
As for USB3 that you mentioned, i think you may be onto something. The USB Reader is USB3 but my laptop has USB2 ports. Saying that it stopped working on the RPI also.
I don't want to admit it but i think i may have to buy a new reader not giving up yet though

This is the outcome in the order of things:

# dmesg again
Gave the same result as above.
# sudo fdisk -l | grep sdb
Gave no return
and finally:
# mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt
Code:
sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt
mount: /mnt: special device /dev/sdb1 does not exist.
Until now i was unable to see the USB in dmesg, it's a start, but still lost.

The error message says that the modules usb-uhci and usb-ohci are not present. What firmware do you have installed? I'm not sure exactly which package contains those modules, but try installing firmware-linux-free, firmware-linux-nonfree, firmware-misc-nonfree, and firmware-linux, if they are not already installed. Perhaps try installing one at a time until you find it.

System info says Kernal version 5.4.0-42-generic
Which I am guessing corresponds with the last part of the error message usb-uhci and usb-ohci not being present.
As to what you suggested, i have no idea what they are or where to find them, YET! but will look into them. They look like a lot of things to just try....and hope

You have to install many modules manually, in addition to the kernel. Try the packages I suggested. You can tell whether they are installed by using
Code:
apt-cache policy <packagename>
, obviously using the actual package name, which I gave you, and which are not included in the bare kernel.

Just as a frame a reference my CentOS 7 does not have these as loadable modules either and USB works fine. They are just compiled into the kernel and I assume Mint is similar. If those drivers were not loaded you would not of seen those sdb1 in the output of dmesg. I'm fresh out of ideas...

I would have thought they were in the kernel also, but I don't know about his kernel. I've never seen that issue, so I'm really clutching at straws.

Thanks anyway people
To all of you that kindly took the time....Thank you
Apparently this is a very uncommon problem and i guess i have to just accept that i can no longer use this reader as i want.
I wont take any more of your time on this issue but will post here 'IF' ever I manage to solve the problem just in case anyone else needs it.
Thanks again.
P.S feel free to suggest though.
For info the other firmware's are not present.

Why SOLVED'ish
I hadn't actually stopped trying to get this to work, i kept on googling & visiting different sites and threads, i even came back here to other threads for similar issues and after trying lots of things some of which were old, i ground things down to mount options. When trying with a different live usb i could occasionally see the reader so i noted the info down (from previous suggestions here ) and started to look into that and fstab. I have learned a fair bit so far but have to admit that I am not entirely sure why things are working again.
What is really puzzling me is that it suddenly stopped working on linux only and after re-configuring the mount options on the laptop I still had to modify them on the RPI. Ok no problem really, I can finally see the reader and card on both machines........now for this 'ish bit
I have noticed that if i just plug the reader in it doesn't get detected or mount. But if i verrrrry slowwwwwly and geeeeently plug it in it gets detected and mounts without a problem. Although I am hoping this isn't a larger problem because i still haven't managed to get the thing to be detected and mount on boot. That's the next step but will open a new thread if i can't get my head round it.

Stop searching. If it worked once, your problem is crappy connections. Fix or replace if it bugs you. It would sure bug me.

I believe there is no reason to have the older ohci or uhci in a uefi based system.
