Samsung SyncMaster 914V

I bought this monitor new, thinking I could just hook it up, with FC4 finding the correct drivers. Not so. I checked options, finding lots of SyncMaster's listed - but not the 914V. Anyway, it's working with a common driver now, with two resolutions available.

What's the process for getting monitor types added to default selections?

Thanx in advance for your help . . .

You don't need to add a driver for any monitor. The monitor database in XFree86 and in Xorg are just known settings for known monitors. It isn't important if your monitor is on the list. What you need to do is to open your user manual to the technical specifications page. You will need to find things like the horizontal sync rate, vertical sync rate, maximum resolution, and other technical details. Then you enter these into the proper section of the /etc/X11/XF86Config file or the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

Your distribution may have an applet to make this easier. I am not familiar with Fedora Core but I have heard that it has a sysadmin tool. See if that is true and if you can configure your X software using the sysadmin tool. You will still need all of the numbers that I mentioned but the system administration tool should at least be able to ask the questions and enter the data in the proper manner in your X configuration file.

Thanx a million. I don't know what we'd do without help from people in the community like you. Sorry for the late reply - and thanx again.
