Samsung Syncmaster 750 shaking screen
Hello,
I am running Mandrake 9.2 and have already installed the proper NVIDIA drivers for my card. My screen (Samsung Syncmaster 750s) shakes at resolutions higher than 1024X768. I'm not sure what to do. I use high res when I'm in the Windows environment and there are no shakes. I've tried tweeking the horiz and vert numbers - I downloaded the user manual for the monitor and entered the proper values. I'm not sure if I should use plug-n-play, custom, etc. in the monitor config. I have tried many of these but still, the shakes are there. It's not me - I know I am not shaking . . . too much. Any ideas as to how I can solve this. Many thanks. |
What's your /etc/X11/XF86Config look like? Paste the whole thing in here! If you've got a DPMS line in there, you might want to yank that so it'll run only the assigned values.

Thanks finegan. I already reinstalled Mandrake 9.1 (which never gave me any shaking). But I have a related "newbie" question. in my X11 folder in 9.2 I saw files XF86Config and XF86Config-4. I assumed that -4 was the newer version of XF86Config because it had a lot more info on it and it was where I made the changes to accept my video card.
Is this an accurate assumption? Is it OK to ignore XF86Config once you have -4 in the folder. Please advise when you have time. Best . . . |
The XF86Config file is what you get when you configure X by way of xf86config and the XF86Config-4 file is from the accelerated graphics configuration, for some reason they are named with the -4 in the file name. If you have both in the same directory (/etc/X11/) then it'll depend on which one your system is setup to read from.

rberry88 is kinda right...
Mandrake, SuSe and the Hat have been shipping both an XFree86 4.x.x series and the old 3.3.6 series server with their distros ever since 4.0.1 came out, about 2+1/2 years now. A lot of older cards were dropped by the 4 series and a lot of weird cards, some Tridents mostly as I've seen didn't get 4 support until 4.2.1, so the auto-installer will see these and install the old XFree 3.3.6. So, in order to keep the two seperate, they compiled their version of XFree 4.x.x to NOT look for an XF86Config file by default, but instead to look for one with -4. If I remember right, at least with RH 7.3 (the last distro I played with that had this idiosycrasy), if you remove the XF86Config-4 from /etc/X11, it'll use an XF86Config as a fallback default. The 3.3.6 series XFConfig files are NOT cross compatible with the 4.x.x series ones... At least not with 4.2.0 which was the last one I made the mistake of trying that with, maybe the earlier ones are? X is full of little quirks like that, for instance if you have a /root/XF86Config file and fire up X as root, it'll read that one first, and ignore the one in /etc/X11. Cheers, Finegan |
OK -The shakes are back - this is what my XF86Config-4 file looks like BEFORE I install the NVIDIA driver. With this configuration, there is no shaking whatsoever - it is the default config that Mandrake detects when it is installing . . .

OK - This is the XF86Config file AFTER I install the NVIDIA driver in accordance with directions from NVIDIA's website - you'll see the only change is that I've changed driver "nv" to "nvidia"
Does this help?
