samsung syncmaster 205BW on a laptop screen resolution

I just got a Samsung SyncMaster 205BW and I want to use it with my laptop (HP Pavilion dv4000). (only need one screen not two)

Using Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy)

The laptop uses 1280x800.

The external monitor uses 1680x1050.

When I boot up with the external monitor it will only give me 800x600.

Not sure how to get the resolution correct. I tried adding 1680x1050 to xorg.conf but that didn't do it.

Any suggested how to's out there?

Thanks in advance!

same deal

I have (almost) exactly the same problem. I'm running the samsung 205bw monitor, externally from my fujitsu s6240 laptop. I can get only 800x600 resolution. This is one of two things that is keeping me from using ubuntu, or any linux at all for that matter.

I also tried hacking around with the xorg.conf with no joy.

anybody?

anybody?

could the problem be that intel 915 cards do not support 1680x1050? If so is it a question of getting the xorg.conf correct or is this a lost cause?

Thanks in advance

I don't think that's the issue -- I routinely run my monitor externally from my laptop in 1680x1050 under windows. I just can't reproduce that feat in linux.
