Samsung sn-324b CDRW/DVD and Mandrake 9.1
I've got a Dell CDRW/DVD combo drive and before i try to start using it to watch DVD's in linux I wanted to see if anyone knows for certain if it's compatible/supported by my distro?
I read the FAQs. I running 2.4.21-0.13mdk.
I've read a few people have it working in red hat so i figure there's hope.

Well, if it can help you: my sister's got a HP laptop with a CDRW/DVD running Debian
and everything works great.

ok. i just downloaded the source for mplayer and read the readme, it said even a P3 800 may run DVDs slowly.
I have a P2 400...
Basically, and i'm sure loads of people sympathise with this, I'm more than happy to mess about trying to get the DVD to work...if there is a chance I can!
If it's going to be pretty much fruitless as the playback will be crap or the drive is fundamentally unsupported I don't really see the point of even trying as fun as it might be!
Surely everyone can appreciate that? I'm just looking for someone who has a similar set up and success, might be a needle in a haystack but it's worth asking!
oh
p.s. iceman, forgive me but i fail to see how your post is supposed to be even remotely useful to me...your sister has an HP laptop, a different model of CDRW/DVD and is running a different distro...i'm pleased hers works tho!

Fair enough, but that's why I said "if it can help you".
I fail to see why one cdrom/DVD/CDRW/... would work and another not on a given OS
(let's say if they both are scsi).
My DVD,cdrom and cdrw work with whatever OS I boot.
But then again, I'm not a hardware techie

so why are you posting pointless commentary on this thread?
i think i was quite specific in my question, as suggested in the FAQ.
as far as i know compatibility of hardware depends on the kernel/distro version and not all hardware is compatible with all kernels. This may not be true, i don’t know – this was implied in my question and all you have done is admitted you don’t know either…so why are you posting? Not because you were just short of a 1000 posts or anything?
i'll re-iterate my questions:
1. has anyone successfully used xine or mplayer to play DVDs on a P2 400 system without an accelerated graphic card
2. has anyone done this with a Dell/Samsung SN-324b CDRW/DVD Combo drive and Mandrake 9.1 (2.4.21-0.13mdk)

Hey dude, I'm trying to say that there's no reason why your stupid dvd won't work with any distro.
It's a lame dvd player we're talking about hrere, not a NIC noone ever heard of.
Yes your dvd works with mandrake, yes your dvd works with redhat, yes your dvd
works with suse, yes your dvd works with debian, slack, gentoo,...
And for some dark mysterious reason you just tell people you've got a p2 400.
"Will it play dvd's?" Do you really want a good answer?
Maybe you should tell everyone how much RAM that pc's got.
I've seen p2 400's play dvd's, but then again, they had lotsa RAM (for that time that is)
But hey, don't listen to me, 'cause once again you won't get why this post 'is supposed to be even remotely useful to you'.

right, fine, all that taken it into consideration but a few more stupid questions/points...
a. the intelligence or physical ability of my dvd player isn't in question
b. mandrake have lists of compatible hardware on their site - mine isn't on there, would this lead you to question compatibility? no - why? is this list notoriously useless or are DVDs almost always compatible?
c.

why didn't you just say that in the first place and explain why you know that? That's all I wanted!

I got my DVD player working in Linux pretty easily (In case you have come here as result of a search)
However, my machine is quite low spec, I only have a 400MHz P2 and it seems (from what I have read) that using mplayer (just mplayer!) is not advisable performance wise. The playback is choppy and I have found only one set of settings where the sound is actually synchronized with the picture. This is common on low spec machines, i gather.
There is a review of DVD software here: http://www.linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=5644 with the following info:
Quote:
The only thing to remember is that MPlayer does need to be run on a fairly powerful PC (greater than 500MHz) to work properly.
|
Unless someone can suggest a few more config options (i have other posts on the topic) i'll have to abandon mplayer and try something else...but the hardware does work.
As iceman said it would...
