Samsung SCX-4729FW multifunction printer under linux
 

I am currently at a friend's who wants to convert to Linux. He owns a Samsung SCX-4729FW printer and distro choice will largely depend on support for that printer.
I tried to install it in a live system on Mint LTS Cinnamon, Debian Wheezy with Gnome and on my own Laptop under Opensuse 12.3 and Aptosid... No success.

On Linux Mint the printer was recognized as SCX 472x and I could not even choose drivers, it just installed automatically.
On Debian Wheezy same behavior.
On Opensuse the driver choice contained nothing similar to the printer name.
On Aptosid it looked most promising:
I tried it through Jetdirect by specifying
as the printer address. The suggested drivers looking most interesting where:

Samsung SCX-472x Foomatic/lj5gray (en)
Samsung SCX-472x Foomatic/pxlmono (en)
Samsung SCX-472x Series PXL (en)

Tried all of them ... no luck. On all systems the behavior is the same: When I try to submit a job the printer does not do anything...

With the driver "Samsung SCX-472x Foomatic/pxlmono (en)" the cups interface claimed that the job was submitted successfully.
With the driver "Samsung SCX-472x Foomatic/lj5gray (en)" the cups interface says: processing since Tue Oct 1 18:35:48 2013 "Connected to printer."

I also can't find anything that looks useful in the cups error log...

So my questions are
1) Did anyone manage to get this printer (and the scanner that's part of it) to run under linux and, if so, what distro was used and how was it done?
2) Based on the info above, does anyone have any ideas on how I could troubleshoot this problem

Arrrf. Forget it. All it took was unplugging and restarting the $%&/()=&$% printer. Sometimes things are so simple...

EDIT: need to correct this. The critical change was to connect the printer via USB... Still can't get it to work over network... Installing Mint now.

Two points, in case you're still interested.

You could try Samsung's own Unified Linux Driver Package. I use that with my laser printer.

Another thing that occurred to me, as far as the netwok and SUSE is concerned, is whether the firewall might be getting in the way (Debian and its derivatives have it turned off by default).

Hi David, thanks for the reply. I actually did try the Unified Linux Driver Package later on but did not bother to post it as it did not help.
After some more trying I actually asked my friend to print something from within Windows... and it didn't work either! Only once the USB cable was connected the print jobs were executed. I suspect something is wrong with the printer itself...

Or you friend doesn't have it properly configured in Windows, either. My office mates print from this model using Windows and the network. I, on the other hand, have to plug in the cable to get it working in Debian.
