Samba Quick Steps?

Edit: Sorry, I thought I was in the Networking forum. Can this please be moved?

I run two computers at home: one is my own box, which I run SUSE 10 on, and a laptop with Windows 2000 for work.

Just wondering if there is a quick and easy way of setting up Samba so that I can use the Linux box to work on files and then store them on the Linux machine and transfer them over to the Windows machine when needed? What do I need to do on the Windows machine?

However, considering the brick-like properties of the Samba reference books out there I'd imagine it's not an easy task.

Have a look at this link. It starts out with a fairly simple configuration. Samba can get complicated quickly. http://www.samba.netfirms.com/sambconf.htm#smb

Here is another link to the official site. There is a "no frills" samba server listed here.

http://us1.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/

Depending on your distro, some now offer wizards to help you get samba running in a hurry.

As for the windbloze machine, not too much. Basically you need to install "file and print sharing". Make a share, and set up passwords as required. Set a network name, you will need that on the linux side also.

See this link, chapter 3 has a section for W2k. http://us1.samba.org/samba/docs/using_samba/toc.html

Hope this helps.
