Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Unhappy Sagem F@st 800 PE usb adsl modem

Hell there,
I'm running SuSE 8.3 Pro on my PC. Tri boots Windows/Linux/Beos.
Anyway, we got Tiscali broadband installed a few months ago, and it uses the modem mentioned in the title.
At the time I tired to get it setup under linux, and had no luck, even after searching this site.
I downloaded the Eagle drivers, and installed. No go.
Well, i've left it for a few months, but finally decided to have a crack again.
Still no go. Even worse, i've semi-blown up my install when I recompliled my kernel to add PPPoA support (machine boots, but says it doesn't support vfat, NVidia module wont load so no GUI, etc) hence the lack of hardware info. I will edit this to add more info tomorrow, as right now I just don't wanna go through the reboot agro :-)
Speaking of this blow up, I keep getting erros about unresolved symbols in the reiserfs module when I compile. Do anyone know if the kernel source in SuSE 8.3 was bust, or is it something else?

Anyway, what i'm actually asking is has anybody got this modem to work under linux, and if so how?
I need it either explained either using the SuSE tools (YaST, etc) or using tools that will be present on all distros please :-) I'm not gonna change distro, i've got to used to SuSE.

On bootup the modem gets recognised as an 'communication device' but is listed as being unclaimed by any active driver.
The power light on it appears, but the ADSL light refuses to light up.
The ADI driver appears to want a device called ADIModem, which I don't have.
YaST tells me it's installed it as either eth-usb (if I use network option) or dsl0 (if I use DSL option) but I cannot find either of the devices in /dev or it's sub-directories.
I have got my vci/vpi numbers, and the type of encapsulation used. I tried editing the ADI driver option file to add these, made no difference.
I installed PPPoA that came with the driver, and it appears in /usr/sbin (I think, may be somewhere else) running that does nodda.
I'm stuck. I really would like to use linux more, and did once, but have been unable to the last 2 years owing to being unable to hook it up to the net (last year was a dodgy dial-up connection)
Any help?
Thank you.
