Safely removing ext hdd

I have this Freecom external usb hdd… when plugged-in it loads normally but I don’t know how to safely remove the device?

Well, unmounting it will clear the write buffer ( sometimes there is a LOT of data in there! ) and make sure no one has files open on the drive before you remove it. If it says "device busy" when you try to unmount it, running the command line "lsof /path/to/mount/point" will show you who/what has files open. The big problem children for me have been Konqueror and the terminal window. For some reason Konqueror keeps file open even after you have stopped browsing the USB drive, and I sometimes have to close it completely before unmounting the USB drive. The other culprit is me being on the USB drive in a terminal window, changing to another directory fixes that problem so I can unmount the drive.

I have had fewer problems since learning how to us UDEV to give the drive to the same device name everytime and mount/unmount from there. It something to think about.
