Sad sad story, recovery help needed
 

So, I have....or had *sniff' an EFG 120 NAS unit from Linksys. It was great, until one day I't freezes up. Turns out that the hardware is flawed. So, I take out the two disks and attempt mounting them in Windows using the appropriate tools. However, It does not work. After many other more or less creative approaches, I install Ubuntu on an old PC. One of the disks I connect to the IDE interface. The other I connect to the USB-port using an adapter. Both attempts failed miserably.

The IDE-disk is not mounted, alltho I can see it in device manager....The USB-unit mounts, but I have no access. I get a message claiming Im not the owner. The data I need was located in public folders on the drive. That does not seem to matter.... How do I go about this....? If anyoone knows, surely the people that use this forum do.

HELP!!!! Ive been battling this problem for a week now...

I suggest you download Slax 6.0

It will permit you to log in as root. That should solve your USB disk probelm.

It will mount everything that is mountable in your PC. That should solve your internal disk problem.

Just "sudo nautilus" should do the trick on Ubuntu.
