Question S3 Virge DX can't get higher than 640 x 480

Hi all,

This is my first time attempting a dual monitor setup. I'm using RH8.0 with two S3 cards. XFree version is 4.2.0 Output from lspci is:

00:08.0 VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc. 86c325 [ViRGE] (rev 06)
00:09.0 VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc. ViRGE/DX or /GX (rev 01)

The first card works fine but I can't get the second (S3 virge DX (86c375 chipset)) to display higher than 640 x 480.

Looking throught the XF86 log i get:

II) S3VIRGE(1): Not using mode "800x600" (no mode of this name)
(--) S3VIRGE(1): Virtual size is 640x480 (pitch 640)
(**) S3VIRGE(1): Default mode "640x480": 25.2 MHz, 31.5 kHz, 60.0 Hz
(II) S3VIRGE(1): Modeline "640x480" 25.20 640 656 752 800 480 490 492 525 -hsync -vsync
(==) S3VIRGE(1): DPI set to (75, 75)

My XF86Config file is:

Does nayone know what the problem could possibly be. The S3virge DX should be capable of displaying at least 800x600 at 16bits. Any ideas?

This might seem obvious, but you are running both screens in 16 bit, right? Seeing as you don't have 800x600 listed in the second Monitor config for 24 bit, it shouldn't let you change to it, if you are infact running in 24 bit. Also, you might want to put in the H/V sync values for the second monitor, but that shouldn't have an affect on what resolution that it can use.

I'd definitely recommend trying to limit (further) the modes that you have listed as usable however, or at least have of the two monitor/video cards having the same restrictions.

Yeah, i've tried changing resolutions and colour depths. I still can't get 800 x 600 on the second card. I've done what you suggested and changed my XF86Config (posted below), still no luck. Any other ideas?

Working now

I took the other bit of your advice and found out the H/V Sync rates for my Monitor (LG 775N). Looks like it does have an affect on the resolution coz after putting 'em in it worked.

Cheers!

PS - One other question. Is there a way to reload X windows with a different config while you are still in it (in case I wanted the ability to switch between single/dual monitors without having to restart)?
