RTL8139 Network Card Won't Initialise

I'm running Debian 3.0r2 (Woody), with a 2.4 kernel (although I have added a lot of updates from Sarge)

I installed a Realtek 8139 NIC card yesterday, and am having problems getting it to work. I think it's an IRQ conflict problem.

dmesg gives the following output, almost at the end:

PCI: Found IRQ11 for device 00:0a.0
IRQ routing conflict for 00.0a.0, have irq5, want irq11

(BTW the card works in windows 98 & Knoppix, at IRQ 11)

I tried to do: insmod 8139too, but got the following error:

<PATH> unresolved symbol mii_nway_restart_Rc3c95150
<PATH> unresolved symbol mii_link_ok_R5231eea7
<PATH> unresolved symbol mii_ethtool_gset_R810ebbf7
<PATH> unresolved symbol mii_ethtool_sset_R87353297

where <PATH> is: /lib/modules/

If I do lsmod, 8139too is not listed

If I do ifup eth0 I get: ignoring unknown interface eth0=eth0

If I do modprobe -c, the output says: alias eth0 off

I've also tried manually setting up the card in Linuxconf, but no joy.

I'd really appreciate any help to get this working. I've tried a lot of Distro's and settled on Debian. I've spent a *lot* of time setting up this system, and although the NIC works in Knoppix, the sound doesn't (so try xyz Distro instead).

Don't know if it matters, but some other basic specs:

AMD K6 500MHz

VIA chipset mobo
Aureal AU8830 soundcard
Maxtor HD, dual booting with Windows 98.

I complied the kernel specially for this card last night, with fast ethernet support as a module, selecting the Realtek 8139 driver.

Thanks in advance,

You could try the etherconf utility and see if it either helps or gives an error message that helps resolve the problem.

as it says its an irq conflict..prob with the soundcard..try removing soundcard..I dont know how to reolve irq conflict in linux..although you could go into your bios and manually configure the irqs from there

Thanks for these two suggestions - I'll try ethconf as soon as I get home.

After I re-compiled the kernel to add modular support for ethernet drivers the soundcard stopped working, but the NIC still didn't (although IIRC, when I did dmesg the NIC appeared to be installed OK, just no network access). I think the IRQ stuff only appeared after re-installing ALSA and getting sound back.

This afternoon I re-compiled the kernel with the NIC driver built-in, rather than as a module. Still no net access, but I don't get the IRQ conflict message in dmesg (and no sound again). I'll keep toiling with the NIC before re-installing ALSA (again). Maybe once I've got net access (which lets face it is more important than sound), I'll try for sound again.

Thanks again for the suggestions
