Router recommendations? (Consumer)

Any recommendations on what router to get just for the home LAN. One of those 4 port jobbies... I used to get Linksys but now I hear they got bought by cisco and they're not the same or something?

Thanks,

(No, I don't want to turn and old computer into a router thanks.)

The Linksys brand is still reliable whether Cisco as a parent or not.

Do you need or want wireless? How many NIC ports do you need?

The Linksys WRT54G is a great router at a fair cost. It will provide you with wireless and wired. If you need more ports then just get a switch to add to the router. The 'WRT54G' should be had for about $50 (US). Switch cost vary and depend on the number of ports you need.

You could search LQ and find tons of posts on this subject.

The WRT54G and WRT54GL are two different routers. The latter is based on Linux. They look the same but the firmware is different.

Good luck with the new router.

Just bought a WRT54GL

After much agony and hand wringing, I finally decided on the WRT54GL mainly because over 2000 people had bought one and the majority of reviews were good. It was deeply discounted probably because it isn't an N router but we'll see how it works when it arrives.

It arrived. I'm using it now. Very satisfied. Looking for instructions for installing Tomato (for first time newbie).
