router firmware for linux or xp?

red hat 7.2 kernel 2.4.7-10(desktop)

linksys wired router (has linux firmware no site)

windows xp (on laptop)

i want my linux to act as the router

so, can i have the internet modem goto my router and my linux to my router? my windows will be going to my router also.

and if thats possible should i keep the router firmware for windows or should i download the linux firmware for the router

seems like if i downloaded the linux firmware windows wouldn't know what to do or have access, but on the other hand when i connect everything up through the router and the router acting as the dchp i can connect to the internet with linux.

i'm still really confused on where to start, i just began learning linux and i don't want to put linux on the internet unsecure.
