I'm just in the process of switching to Linux.

I've got a decent spec pc, and a debian sarge netinst disk i burned off.
Unfortunately my usb modem wasn't recognized, so I'm going to use the ethernet connection.

My question is this: I have two rj45 x rj45 leads, one a crossover cable, the other 'straight'.
Do i just plug one of these into the back of the pc, and the other into my existing filter that comes from the wall? If so , which to use?

I wanna give ethernet/netinst a go, cos I'm having difficulties getting all of iso1 from ftp via my browser, and my eDonkey client just seems to fizzle when i leave it alone.

I think a crossover cable is just for a direct pc to pc connection, and anything else uses a straight RJ45. Debian should detect your network card and use DHCP to get an IP address, so it should just work..

What do you mean by existing filter? Are you using DSL service?

Does your modem have an ethernet connector?

I'm sorry - by existing filter i mean the DSL splitter that i have between my wall and existing pc. Its designed to allow phone access to the line alongside internet.

The modem is a usb only one, an alcatel speedtouch.

You can not directly connect the phone line to your PCs ethernet adapter.

It seems that i have managed to download and burn iso1 though, so i might have a go using that later.
