RHES 4 and SATA Hard Drive.
 

On one of my computers I just got RHES 4(64 Bit Version)and for some reason setup wont detect my SATA Hard Drive, I have tried a couple of options in the list. Anybody who knows a quick/magic fix for that ?.

I tried installing SUSE 64 Bit - It just comes up right. So Hardware is working just right. I tried Windows XP on Second Hard Drive - It too works fine for hours. I tried IDE and USB Drives they work ok.

Now again If I try to install RHES 4 64 Bit - No go.
RHES does manage to install on IDE Hard Drive But Speed is exceptionally slow.

Do I need somekind of tweak/fix here ?

Check the manufacturer/model number of your SATA controller and see if its supported in RHES4.

I am running Seagate 80 Gigs SATA 7200 RPM - Will check out model soon. But its amazing on Redhat's part to support Same kinda SATA on RHES 3 32 bit version. Even Fedora 4 works on SATA Hard Drive.

I don't think it's do with RHES 4 support the SATA drie you've, as you say it works fine under other Linuxs' Moreover it's the same standard kernel patched by the vorious distributors to suit their needs.
If it can't detect your HD check your config especially the initrd. What are the messages you see while RHES4 boots ? Do you see the right and required modules loaded ? Watch the boot messages closely and post the details here.
As far as the speed is concerned, probably RHE4 doesn't enable DMA. Read the manpage for hdparm and turn on DMA, which would result in performance boost for your HD.

Ok -

Hard drive is blank / empty

Step 1 - Powern on System
Step 2 - Press eject button on DVD Drive
Step 3 - Tray Comes out
Step 4 - I insert RHES 4 Disc - RHES 4 Disc goes in
Step 5 - Setup initializes.
Step 6 - After a screen or two I gives me screen - Setup was unable to find any hard drives - If you need to select/load any drivers from list/disc - do that now.
Step 7 - I play with a few of the bundled drivers.
Step 6 - After date n time - It stalls - Message - Cannot find Hard Drive.

Step 7 -->
First modprobe the module - scsi_mod
Now modprobe the modules required for your HD. I'm not sure which ones you'd require as I never owned a SATA. A guess - any module that would have "ata" in it. Some of the modules I half-remember - atii_xp, scsi_trasport_fc...... or something similar.
modprobe the module sd_mod

Ofcourse, the best way would be to boot into another linux system you might have already installed or boot with the SuSE linux CD and when it monuts your hard disk, do an lsmod and learn what modules have been loaded. Then, boot with RHES4 disc and load the same modules. I'd suggest uou wait for few seconds between the modprobes as the modules would take few momets to initalize.

Will give it a try that way as well.
