(RHEL 5.6) No sound after installing NVIDIA Video Card with hdmi
 

Before I install NVIDIA video card, the sounds card works fine.

However, after getting video card, the default sound card becomes nvidia and has no sound from motherboard audio jackets.

I encounter this issue before and solved it by installing the audio driver again. However, on this motherboard (Intel DH67CL), I can't find its linux driver to flush nvidia settings.

I tried in "system-config-soundcard" but can't change default sound card order. Why linux is so hard to use? sigh...

Have you tried going to the nvidia website and downloading their video driver? That driver may also be needed to get the audio working with the nvidia video card.

i got video driver from zotac website. the issue is that it flushed away intel audio from default.

I don't have sound from mother board Intel HD audio jacket.

Just follow up on what's going on:

Recap:

1. sound is normal after installation of OS. (RHEL 5.6, i386)

2. Lose sound after installation of (zotac) nvidia video card driver. default sound card becomes nvidia device.

3. tried to install realtek linux driver from there:

4. Pop up with a lot error messages and the "volume control" in front panel starts to fail.

5. Getting really mad and tried to re-install alsa driver from their official site.

Getting more error message and fail to install during "make install".

Now the sound card system is really messed. When click "volumn control", it gives me "No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found".



Now I almost stuck here. Need help to restore system configuration of sound cards and volume control.

Installing the nVidia drivers (why get them from zotac? go to nVidia) is making the HDMI sound controller appear. For some reason, RHEL 5.6 is setting the nVidia HDMI sound controller as the defualt.

run 'alsaconf' or 'alsamixer', then adjust the mixer settings to use the onboard sound chip.

I download the driver from Zotac website since my video card is from them.

I think the driver itself is from Nvidia.

There is no alsaconf or alsamixer in my system. I don't know why?

you decided to buy a $299/ YEAR operating system ( or the $49/year)
And a OLD VERSION at that . RHEL 6.2 is current and 5.8 is current in the older 5 series


RHEL is not free and designed mostly for the headless server
or in the office

it was never designed with general home use in mind

as such most things that most home users would want is NOT included

you would have to install them from the third party repos

Also seeing as this IS RHEL and you MUST have a paid for license .Your very first stop should be with red hat tech support seeing as you ARE paying the $299 PER YEAR required support contract

I would start on the red hat knowledge base

Then use the free forums when you have a specific question on doing something


RHEL 5.6 is old enough that it might not even support your hardware , if it is new .


if you are NOT paying red hat and not going to then do not use it
install one of the FREE rebuilds
CentOS 6.2
ScientificLinux 6.2

but be warned they too like RHEL were not designed for general home use .

Yeah, it would be from nVidia. Zotac dont make drivers.

IMO its always best to go to the source of the drivers if possible, which is why I would go to nVidia to get the drivers, not Zotac.

I dont know enough about RHEL, sorry.

You could try contacting Red Hat, after all, you are paying for support (or should be anyway, if you arent paying Red Hat change distro).
