RH8 and T40 - Mad Merlin Please Help!!!

I have been trying to install RH8 on a THinkpad T40 for a couple of weeks now WITHOUT SUCCESS. The installation seems to go well but on first boot the bootup process hangs and the last messages shown are :

PCI_IDE: (ide_setup_pci_device:) Could not enable device.


I have researched the heck out of this problem and I see comments about USB 2.0 being the culprit, others that point to the video card, but so far I have NOT been able to find a definitive answer and a way to get around the problem.
I have also looked in the RH knowledgebase but no luck.

The only person that I have read has been able to make this work is Mad Merlin, so Mad Merlin if you are able to read this msg and can spare a few minutes, PLEASE HELP ME.

If anyone else can also help PLEASE do so...All help is greatly appreciated.

First, have you tried to mail Mad Merlin directly?

Find Mad Merlin's profile and there should be an email option... if not, whatever thread you found info about this in, you could just post there (albeit please post with a link to this thread), and he'll get email about a reply in his thread, probably... I can't peak at the guy's settings.

I understand that there might be a reason for something this old, SunONE, some other proprietary-ware, but if there isn't, dump it. Your T-40's BIOS runs power management off of ACPI, the kernel in RH8.0 and even RH9.0 has NO support for this. ACPI does more then basic power management, it also runs a lot of the PCI subsystem, hence the error above. There are tricks to get old kernels (and old distros) to work with this, but its really much easier to just skip ahead to one that has it. Fedora Core 1 for example.
