RH 8.0 visor sync problem
I've been toying with this setup for the last 3 revisions of RH but now I need to get it up and running reliably.
Problem: Can't get the visor to communicate with Evolution or Jpilot.
Pressing the hotsync button will result in the following in /var/log/messages:
Dec 31 08:51:46 ltsp kernel: hub.c: USB new device connect on bus1/2, assigned device number 6
Dec 31 08:51:46 ltsp kernel: usbserial.c: Handspring Visor converter detected
Dec 31 08:51:46 ltsp kernel: visor.c: Handspring Visor: Number of ports: 2
Dec 31 08:51:46 ltsp kernel: visor.c: Handspring Visor: port 1, is for Generic use and is bound to ttyUSB0
Dec 31 08:51:46 ltsp kernel: visor.c: Handspring Visor: port 2, is for HotSync use and is bound to ttyUSB1
Dec 31 08:51:46 ltsp kernel: usbserial.c: Handspring Visor converter now attached to ttyUSB0 (or usb/tts/0 for devfs)
Dec 31 08:51:46 ltsp kernel: usbserial.c: Handspring Visor converter now attached to ttyUSB1 (or usb/tts/1 for devfs)
Dec 31 08:51:49 ltsp /etc/hotplug/usb.agent: Setup visor for USB product 82d/100/100
Dec 31 08:52:38 ltsp kernel: usb-uhci.c: interrupt, status 3, frame# 1310
Dec 31 08:52:38 ltsp kernel: usb.c: USB disconnect on device 6
Dec 31 08:52:38 ltsp kernel: usbserial.c: Handspring Visor converter now disconnected from ttyUSB0
Dec 31 08:52:38 ltsp kernel: usbserial.c: Handspring Visor converter now disconnected from ttyUSB1
It seems to be recognized by the kernel but not handed off or acquired by any other software. The visor eventually times out and quits with "The connection between your handheld and the desktop could not be established..."
I have tried both Evolution / gnome-pilot & jpilot with no success. No noteable response from either.

I was able to get inconsistent results with Evolution and RH 7.2 a while back. Any further insight and suggestions would be greatly appreciated! The equipment works fine from 98SE.

I have had great success using mine. It is /dev/ttyUSB1
When I want to sync, I open jpilot, then I press the sync button on the visor, after a second or two I press the sync button in jpilot.
It syncs perfectly using that method, the device, then the button in jpilot. Until I tried that methid I was never able to get them to sync.

Visor Handheld Syncing Problem
I too am having a similar problem. I am running Red Hat 8.0 with the KDE desktop and I'm using Evolution. First, my directory and links look like this:
[root@localhost eboggess]# ls /dev/ttyUSB0 -al
crw-rw-rw- 2 root uucp 188, 0 Aug 30 19:31 /dev/ttyUSB0
[root@localhost eboggess]# ls /dev/pilot -al
total 124
drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 4096 Jan 16 15:14 .
drwxr-xr-x 21 root root 118784 Jan 16 15:13 ..
crw-rw-rw- 2 root uucp 188, 0 Aug 30 19:31 ttyUSB0
[root@localhost eboggess]#
Each time I try to hotsync, I get the following message from my Visor and this list of messages in /var/log/messages:
Visor Error
"The connection between your handheld computyer and the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again."

I had something similar to that and found the quickest fix was to upgrade Evolution using redcarpet, if you also update the pilot add ons also you may find it works ok. It did for me, before I could connect and read using pilot-xfer but Kpilot et al didn't work fully. The best I could get was a three second connection and sync which transfered no data!!!

Philta, that is exactly what happens to me. Well let me explain...
I can sync my Visor perfectly with JPilot, everything works grand. But I am not very happy with the application itself, it is not very slick and I would really like to use evolution instead, I just like to be bale to have it all at hand while I am writing emails.
In evolution all I get is that connection, a breif sync where nothing is trasferred and then a clean up and that's it. Nothing is done.
I really want to use evolution, please can you explain to me excatly how you updated evo thru redcarpet, I have already dopwnloaded and installed it (redcarpet I mean).
Thanks mate, I will be forever indebted if we manage to sort this out.
Vlad.

Upgrading evolution using red carpet
What you do to upgrade Evolution is run redcarpet and subscribe to the Evolution group, then select the updates (can't remember the version) and run it. Once you've done this you'll find that evolution will sync with your palm/visor and your address book etc will be copied to the mail client. Good luck
