RH 7.3 CD-Rom Not opening? Help Pls!
Hello! I'm a new user to Linux and I've finally got RH 7.3 up and running, but ... my CD-Rom doesn't want to open! I left Battlefield 1942 in there when I was in windows and I can see the contents of the cd when I change to that directory -- cd /mnt/cdrom , ls ,
Autorun.inf data2.cab layout.bin .. blah blah.
I have the RH Linux 7.2 bible and went through the book to edit the fstab properties like so....
LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
/dev/hdb5 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 auto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto auto,owner,kudzu 0 0
/dev/hda1 /mnt/win vfat auto,exec,rw,user 0 0
It looks correct as far as I can tell, but what do I know heh. I'm using SONY CD-RW 32x10x40x on an ABIT KT7E with AMD Athlon 1.4Ghz system. It kinda feels like the cd-rom is "off" since pushing the eject button does absouletely nothing. Anyways, any help would be Greatly Apprieciated!!!

You can't open the cdrom because the filesystem is mounted. To remedy the situation, become root and type:
That should automatically eject the cd.
The "auto" designation for /dev/cdrom in your /etc/fstab indicates that the system, when it boots, should check for a cd and mount it if it finds one.

You can always call a manual eject too, something handy for Sparc floppy drives (insert annoyed eyeroll here):
eject /dev/cdrom
No kidding, that works.
Cheers,

Eject
Actually most RH systems by default will eject the CDrom with just
the command eject if you are not logged in as root.
I still have a
gripe with how periphials are handled. If you use the KDE or Gnome
browsers as most windoze folks are inclined to do you have to
umount the drive before it will eject. I've spent many an hour
explaining why and how to do a umount because of this.
