RH 7.3 and "new" IDE hardware
 

I just put together a box with a ASUS P4S533 motherboard that uses the SiS 647DX? chipset. Anyway, I have a Maxtor (Uhg) ATA-133 hard drive and the ATA/133 controller on the MB. Of course, when RH boots, it sets the IDE down to 33 Mhz.

Will RH 7.3 allow me to "say" idebus=133, or is that out of the question? What is the best I can do with this setup? 66,100 or 133 Mhz? Or is RH actually using it properly, due to my BIOS setting? It seems as though HD access is a bit slower than the Windows setup I had on it before.

I'm sure this is a RTFM question... but my eyes are aweful tired from RTFM'ing all night. Have mercy. ;-)

Oddly enough Hardware tends not to be an RTFM kind of forum. Actually, the only way to get an evil response is to post a poorly worded question. This is direct and to the point.

I'd recommend just kicking the speeds up from the command line before making them part of lilo or putting them in an init like /etc/rc.d/rc.local and see how your system handles them.

But of course... backing up the whole mess first.

After years and years of distain for X window, only using a GUI on a *nix box for multiple xterms to telnet/ssh to the servers..... I finally gave in and downloaded a whole ISO set (I usually just ftp kernel source and other parts of a linux system). The last time I did a CD install was probably Slackware 3.0!!

I am really amazed at how far the folks have come with the GUI and the install (using RH 7.3, on this one). I almost felt like it was cheating to have the install setup everything... *even* X, without a bunch of editing of .conf files! I was shocked that the darn thing just picked up everything out of the box! I guess I might even change my opinion that Linux and the *nix'es in general, are best left for running services (httpd, bind sendmail, etc)! I might even go as far as to say that it's even valid to say that using Linux as a desktop (instead of Windoze) is a sane thing to do.

Either my blood sugar is out of whack... or I am really impressed with the progress that some folks have made with the GUI end of Linux!

Slack 3.0? So we're talking late '95, early '96? This predates Gnome AND KDE, wacky! Yeah GTK+ and Qt are pretty badass toolkits. The major problem is that there is two of them; which of course can run side by side, but require that you install the cores of two different desktop platforms. If you're using the Gnome UI (my guess, RH's default) and want to see what other chunky desktop cream puff lovin' there is, KDE made a major leap with 3.0 There's also about 7-8 other desktops, file managers, blah blah blah for the fans of big chunky pretty goop as well as barebones, no frills, as close to twm as they can get and have it not look like... well, twm.

Six years later... Wow, I'm afraid to think what Linux will look like in 6 more years. Enjoy,

Hehe, like most of the hardware at home. I've neglected it, because of the lack of time to use it!

I have a nice machine that I use for playing games on, so when I went to spend some money for it, I decided to get a GeForce4 Ti4600 for it. So, when it was all up and going (with the latest drivers) I didn't notice too much improvement. So I went on IRC to find some answers. When I detailed the hardware (P2 on a P2BX Asus Mobo) I was laughed out of the channel. I guess I should have had a Mobo with AGP 2 and processor at least as fast as the one on the Vid card... before expecting drastic performance improvement.

I think I'm rambling.....

Oh oh oh oh... I forgot my PDP-8 story! And then there is the one about Lunar Lander on a 30 foot teletype tape, in Octal. Still got the tapes... but the teletype reader is long gone. Anyone know where I can dig up a good tape reader.... and maybe a punch card reader too? I still have some boxed programs on the punch cards for the old VAX. Hmm, is this what my next vacation is going to be?

The curse of having a job and a hobby be one and the same. You never get away from it. But, on the other hand, everyday is vacation! Except when they put the spector of "factory down time" over your head, or put you on salary... then the 90 hour weeks aren't so fun. LOL

A Tape reader and a punch card reader for an old PDP-8! an 8! wasn't UNIX developed on a 10? Dude, that's old school. To dig one up you're at least going to need a backhoe. A couple of the archano-beepy-phile undergrads here at Ga Tech fought and lost a battle to keep the CS department from chucking the PDP-11.


Now you're talking, there's gotta be some OpenBSD or NetBSD junky that has some old Vaxen with hand coded device drivers for a punch card reader...
